IN-DEPENDANCE is a new gallery founded by Martijn van Pieterson and Annemarie Zethof, owners of IBASHO gallery. Situated at the Waalsekaai in Antwerp, the gallery will mainly focus on photography, but will also present other visual arts, where materiality, craftsmanship, and an understated aesthetic are center-stage. Contrary to the Japanese focused gallery IBASHO, IN-DEPENDANCE will mostly show works by Western artists.
IN-DEPENDANCE is complementary to IBASHO gallery, serving as a multi purpose artspace where diverse cultural events can take place. IN-DEPENDANCE will not only work with a roster of artists, but will also invite artists on a project basis and other galleries to showcase specific artists that fit. In addition, IN-DEPENDANCE also houses prints from IBASHO's stock and the stock of books published by IBASHO & the(M) éditions.
"In all the years searching for top talent and masterful photography related to Japan, we have come across interesting projects and artists whose work would fit perfectly within IBASHO's programme were it not for the lack of a link to Japan. IN-DEPENDANCE will allow us to show these works without watering down IBASHO's focus.”
