IN-DEPENDANCE by IBASHO is proud to present ‘Standing Still’, a solo exhibition by Iranian
visual artist and performer Morvarid K (b. 1982), who lives and works between Berlin/Germany and Bordeaux/France.
Through the manipulation of photographic prints and organic matter, Morvarid K explores our perception of time and memory. Often working with the themes of nature and ecology, her artistic practice highlights presence through absence. The materials she employs anchors her work in reality, while transformative techniques add layers of complexity and depth, often through performative processes.
‘Standing Still’ draws inspiration from the way plants and trees exist in the world. According to Morvarid K, plants rooted in place, have no choice but to face the conditions around them, whatever they may be. This constraint leads them to develop a relationship with their environment that is radically different from that of the animal kingdom. Plants adapt and transform, not to dominate their surroundings, but to coexist with them. Where humans exploit, plants engage in a logic of interdependence.
'Standing Still’ is rooted in the research conducted by the Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, based in the states of Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. Morvarid K’s project extends beyond the scientific field, through artworks that combine photographic archives, organic materials, artisanal gestures, and experimental manipulations. Rather than representing nature, the artist works with it. The work lets materials speak, whether they originate from a burned forest, a scientific laboratory, or a fragment of photographic memory.
‘Standing Still’ seeks to give space to the relationship between materials, gestures, time, and the gaze of the observer. Each piece emerges from a dialogue with what already exists, a found material, an archival fragment, a natural imprint. Morvarid K’s work remains open and attentive, in a state of listening. In keeping with this sense of restraint and clarity, the body of work adopts a sober visual language and a reduced colour palette. Each work in the exhibition is unique.
Morvarid K’s work is held in renowned public and private collections such as MacVal museum, BnF, CNAP, FRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Louis Roederer Foundation. The exhibition opens with a vernissage on 3 September 2026 and will last until 18 October 2026.
